Stick a multimeter into the cigarette lighter socket and go for a drive. Just to confirm your voltmeter isn't having a bad day.
Every now and then my dash voltage gauge flicks upto 16v and the battery warning light flickers on. I have checked all connections on battery leads, earth straps, isolators etc, and nothings loose. Checked alternator brushes, still good, and spring is good aswell. The regulator looks almost new, and the contacts on the relay are clean. A new regulator is only about $40, so i am getting another anyway to see. Is there anything i am missing or should be checking aswell?

Andrew, had the same thing in my 90 RRC a few years back. The fault was the regulator.
Cheers

Reg. is playing up, it's what regulates the voltage, the spikeing indicates its having a rover moment![]()
yesss, but its NOT a lucas regulator, its a hitachi.
Andy
doesnt mean it cant have a bad earth.
bad earth lowers the voltage the reg sees so it ups the volts till it sees the voltage it likes.
when the new higher voltage breaks over the bad earth and it comes good it realises its made a mistake so drops back down.

I had the same problem a few years ago. Replaced the reg and it was still the same.
Auto sparky spent two hours and found one of the two wires that go to the battery in the loom that the reg plugs into was broken.
