    advice county or defender

hi guys just after a little advice at the moment i own to range rovers the wifes 93 which we use to tour and my 86 used for my fun and comp work it has reached the point where it is to modified to drive on the road.
Not having had much to do with landrovers them sleves my dilema is i need a tow vehicle to tow my 2.2 tonne range rover to and from parks. It will also become our touring vehicle.
My question to you guys is a county with a 4bd1 or a 300tdi defender.
which will do the job the best because i really dont want to have to buy a cruiser or patrol..lmao
any advice would be greatly appreciated.. cheers darren

For me the County is the King of the LR's but they are getting a bit old.
If a County 3.9 was available "form the box" that would be my vehicle of choice
See if you can get one in a good nick and rebuild it as a project and you will be very happy.
I have a 1994 Tdi Defe with 107000 km and I am very happy with it.

my 300tdi towed my caravan OK, a little slow up hills, bit quicker down the other side and seemed happy to sit on 100km/h

if you are in no rush a 300tdi defender will get you there

my brother has a 300tdi disco i have driven that but never towed with it. he tows a camp trailer and has no problems .when i drove it felt like i could walk faster thats not a critisism just that im used to a 300 plus bhp rangie..guess the best thing would be to hook the car trailer up to his disco and go for a drive..being such a small motor worries me for the long term towing big heavy wieght total wieght is 3.3 tonne trailer car and spares

the Tdi 300 is very capable engine and de-tuned from the factory.

The british Army use the Land Rover Wolf based on the Tdi300 and it is loaded to 3.5 tons total weight and it performs well in operational conditions.

I think that if you get the pump tuned and a free flow 2 1.2" exaust system the vehicle will be very powerful.

    Cheers

The County-Isuzu is the creme-de-la-creme of Land Rovers. For the first time they made moves towards putting in enough engine. The County has the stronger cv joints which inexplicably were dropped and Defenders make do with inferior ones. The County has the almost indestructible Salisbury diff, and as in the previous sentence Defenders have an inferior item. The 4BD1 lasts virtually indefinitely in LR service. It is an industrial engine meant to be run at rated output and rpm throughout its service life.

your comparing chalk and cheese if you want this as a tow vehicle, definately get the 4bd1, turbo and intercool it and you'll be very happy. Sorry but the 300td1 just won't cut it for towing like the suzi will

300tdi - low range start when towing on hills.

    Bet that gets tired fast.
