Vacuum pump on its way out?

I don't lift the bonnet often with the 4BD1 other than before long trips so haven't noticed a bit of oil below the alternator.
The morning I noticed a small pool of oil when I backed out. I thought no dramas it'll be the oil feed or return line...... It now appears that the oil is going into the alternator and then runs out when first started. About 60mls leaks out and it seems to take up till next start.

Are these vacuum pumps serviceable or am I up for a new one.

Any help would be great..... Where to source parts etc.

    Thanks Tony.

My workshop manual only contains a diagram and specifications. It doesn't have any dis assembly/assembly instructions. So most likely service parts may be hard to obtain.

But they are a simple vane pump. See pic of mine (this is from a 24V alternator).

IMHO, if it is leaking, it would be excessive wear of either the end plate, rotor or the ends of the vanes.

You should be capable of refurbishing it.

The only seal is the o-ring that seals between the housing and end plate.

The 3 lugs on the end plate, rotate into the mating lugs of the housing (bayonet like). If you have to lap the end plate and/or rotor to fix the clearance, then you will have to add to the outside of these lugs to - perhaps make up a shim or build-up with silver solder.

Edit: there is another o-ring on the rear face of the alternator. There most likely is a seal on the the output shaft of the alternator (I haven't checked this).

    Tony,
There is a seal P/N 8941565890 on the rear of the alternator shaft. This is the part number for the 70Amp Hitachi alternator. Most likely your vane pump is ok. If the vacuum to the brakes is good I would say that the vane pump is ok. I had to replace mine a couple of years ago - same thing

Well, I ripped it apart tonight and has turned out the seal has gone hard from old age. Some one has been in here before by the looks of the screw heads Seems they did the bearings and brushes but not bothered with the seal in the rear housing.

The Alternator and vane pump will be fine Just have to find a seal tomorrow. Has NOK BZ2501E. I hope I can find a off the shelf after market jobie for it around here.

    All back togeather

I couldn't stand the leaf sprung toyotas any longer so got busy and stuck it back together today OH What a diference! The grunt and ride of the 4BD1 120 is sooo nice after a few days in a cruiser

As you do I made sure it went back better than it came out. New bolts were required in the vane pump for future serviceability

I locktited the bearing in. If they spin due to bearing failure it stuffs the housing and is a pain to repair.

Took it for a run.... No leaks and charging nicely

All for around $15 and a bit of my time.. Got to be happy with that
