Hi
I have a 1987 county, and it has sealed head lights. will a later model Defender head lights be a simple swap. I am guessing they are not sealed and area a h4 head light. I am looking at upgrading to HID. Thanks
I know I'm stating the obvious but check the wattage of the H4 globes as anything above 55/60 would probably require relays.
As Bearman and Stuck say. It will have originally had H4 lights, and they are a bolt in replacement, but do not try to run anything higher than 55/60 lights without adding a headlight relay. I replaced my original ones with Hella Lights a few years ago because the reflectors were dying, and these, while perhaps not the best available, are certainly probably as good as any readily available.

My 85 county had a mismatched pair of H4 headlights in it when i got it. Nicked a pair of aftermarket ones out of an old Jackaroo. Straight fit, no dramas
The others have covered light fitment.
Fit relays! no matter what wattage you are using. Eventually the switch and/or the fuse holder will fail due to heat - related to amperage.
My 86 county had been fitted with relays behind the dash after all the wires burnt. I recently upgraded lights to a IPF set. I also at the time ran some 6mm wires(overkill, 5mm would be plenty) to them and a relay close to the front. I wired in one at a time. The light difference was amazing with just the wire change.![]()
When I got my 110 it had hella lenses and 55/90 bulbs fitted.
The indicator/hb switch still worked, but flopped around like the proverbial sausage in a hallway because it had been slowly melting...
One of the HB fuses melted the holder, and the fuse clips.
I now have 1 relay each for high and low beam.
