and yes the 4bd1t is the isuzu 3.9l with the factory turbo spec.
It's not legally doable in the US either.

But I'm suprised there aren't more of them built.

depending on which year model D2, which variant of the 4bd1-t you get and how you register the vehicle, it can be legal. (its america after all where so long as you're lawyer is better than the other guys who cares what the rule book says in intent, you just have to find the right loop hole)

As long as the engine is designed / certified / no older than the donor vehicle of equal certification (emissions wise) then in SA it would be legal.

So *if* they made that engine in say 2003 then yes, a D2 could be retrofitted legally.

    Found the solution!
Up to 2001 the electronic indirect injection 4BD2T was an option in the GMC 3500. This is just a 4BD1T with electrical injection
Isuzu Npr Engines for sale | Isuzu Npr engine 4HE1, 4HK1

This means in the USA at least it is legal in a D2 built before 02
Now as the gmc is just a rebadged Isuzu would it be legal here On any D2 OR defender built before 02?
