    fuel pump issues... remote assistance?

    Hi all,
crap situation here given I am in a separate country to the vehicle... my father informs me that my 1988 4BD1 (after market Turbo) has been diagnosed as having a dodgy fuel pump as it occasionally runs on and won't shut down, or alternatively it runs up on starting and hits the governor and stays there until it stops after 30 secs....

he has confirmed that engine oil is NOT being sucked up and the diesel pump blokes claim (sight unseen) that it could be as simple as a broken spring or gummed up valves to something more serious requiring a re-build or replacement.... still trying to get precise part numbers and/or photos, should have these by tomorrow.

any thoughts on potential DIY solutions the mechanically minded old man can try? the good thing is I will be in Melbourne in 2 weeks time so if I can probably buy a new pump here for 50% (or less) of aussie pricing, so I need to make some quickish decisions...

any advice or help appreciated! vehicle is currently in Thomastown for what that's worth!

ha mate not good news, running on can be caused by dribbling injectors but you have two symptoms, with the runing away at start up this could be the governor, as the pump guy suggested a spring and this is more than likely causing the running on as well. I would get the pump looked at and may as well do the injectors as well if they havn't been done.

I seem to recall you saying that some pumps have 9.5 mm plungers? Any idea which engines they were fitted to?

The pump on my 4BD1-T had 9.5 mm plungers, but they are being changed to 10.5 mm using elements for an Isuzu 4HG1-T pump (Ident. No 101401-7452).

er... so from Dave's post am I to surmise that I have a 3.3 litre pump on my 3.9 litre turbo??

anyway, I think it is off to the deisel pump shop for a look-see, hopefully not going down the path of a rebuild, but if I was - any thoughts on changing the injectors? increasing the fueling rate from stock etc? given it was a factory NA motor and I've no idea how much the PO's have mucked about with it, I've now got the chance to right some wrongs so to speak... whatcha reckon brains trust ??

definately have to get my work books back....

it shouldnt need an overhaul those inline kikis are near on indistructable (like the rest of the engine its bolted to)

get the bump clearances set then get the spill ports set the same and your good to go for standard power.

tweaking the spill ports up a little on the rack can give you a good hit and the 3.9 injectors are an easy job to rebuild but its usually just as cost effective to install new ones. when you do get new ones pay a few bucks to get them crack tested and set the crack pressures to the same.

AFAIK 4BD1? will have either 8.5mm or 9.5mm plungers. So I wouldn't jump to any conclusion about possible having the wrong pump.

    Edit:
You posted your pump ident. No as 101401-0291
    My manual (IDE2140) states:
    101401-0290 for the 4BD1
    101401-0660 for the 4BD1-T

My engine is a 4BD1-T out of an Isuzu truck. The pump is away and I can't check its number, but I know I found its number was different to what was stated in that manual.

My conclusion is that engines from different years, and for different markets, may have some differences in the pump, which will be reflected in the Ident. No.

I know from looking in other Isuzu workshop manuals, there were some later Isuzu engine models that had up to four different pumps that I could see listed (and some with different plunger diam.).
