A Spares to carry with you list

An accelerator cable for a Suzi can be improvised with any piece on appropriately sized cable, bailing twine, wire etc... So you can remove that one from your list.


Banjo bolts for injectors and return lines. when you run out of fuel and bleed the system for the first time chances are you'll overtighten one and fracture it so it either leak or sheer the next time you touch it.

Return line is a common break but as Dougal says a couple of hose clamps and rubber hose and it's fixed.


Lets face it a 4BD1 is the sort of engine Dick Strawbridge would drive, if it ever did die it will have to be completely "insert Grimaces Sticker" or it could be bodged and beaten back to life with a ball hammer and a roll of Gaffa tape.

It's not practical to carry a LT95.

All of the above,I prepack wheel bearings in grease,fuel filter still in box poked into an old jam tin to protect it,axle drive flange,gasket and rubber dust cap(flange can be used to fit hub seal if replacing wheel bearings) couple of UJ's,fencing wire(not high tensile)

All I ever carry when I go bush these days are filters, belts,radiator hoses,spare oil and a short length of fuel hose. Nothing else ever goes wrong with these engines. Early on I used to carry spares like alternator, starter, slave cylinder,drive flange,vacuum actuator but I soon realised that if your vehicle was in reasonable condition and preflighted it was unnecessary weight.

I've never considered wheel bearings a spare worth carrying. They're enough of a PITA to change in a garage with a concrete floor.
That and they usually give a decent warning before failing. If your pre-trip inspection involves checking them all and they come up fine then leave the spares at home.

I also run oil bath bearings. So I know they're well lubed.

you need to prepack the wheel bearings as the oil does not instantly get to them especially if you have the oneshot converted wheel hubs.

a lot of spares I carry I generally carry for their Towel value.

But you're talking a whole lot less grease than for a greased bearing right? I used enough grease in mine to cover the first 10km. That's not much.

Just remember, DON'T PANIC!

no the same amount of grease in the bearing and the same amount for the seal. you just dont fill the voids in the hub.

In my experience with these engines they were exceptional and generally trouble free.

The only recurring problem was the 12V Starter motor. We had issues with the solenoid contactor failing as the amperage is higher than the 24V truck versions.

Anyone else have this issue?

It's always a good idea to carry a spare cranking battery as many of today's ones just fail without much warning.
