Because I put a whole new front axle in last year.
The previous one was bent giving the RHS some negative camber, but that damage dated back to the first few owners when it had a V8 in the front. Approx 20 years ago.
Several times I hit things (like washouts and the ground) expecting to damage something and didn't. I can't imagine someone bending an axle casing and not knowing exactly how they did it. These things are 1/4" thick.
IMHO someone got a pretty good value vehicle. The motor and gearbox combination would have been worth that.
Mal Storey laminated front axle housings on 110s because that could bend. I previously owned one. He also experimented with inserting tube to the axle to increase strength but decided on laminating along the bottom.
Land Rover Australia made a heavy duty front axle for the army 110s and 6x6s which looks a bit like a rear salisbury axle.

My front axle was both tubed and laminated by MD. The PO had a PTO winch and a heavy duty steel bullbar mounted up front, on top of the already heavy 4BD1. The axle casing has developed cracks on the diff housing, but I'm not convinced it was from weight. Pic below - the cracks developed vertically in the "valleys" around the crown wheel bulge, and look like welding imperfections, rather than cracks. Possibly welding stress induced?
Back to the thread topic, Sorry gents, the b@$t@rd that outbid you both was my brother.![]()
The car has been delivered to his inlaws in Brisbane and will be making its way to Adelaide after christmas. It's "neat but noisy" according to the inlaws.
His disco got rear ended a couple of months ago (I thought I mentioned it before? - could be wrong). Not sure what happened / is happening with insurance, but this is its replacement. As for the unimog camper plans - I don't think that's likely to happen, at least not in the near future.
I'll take a better photo when I get home, but from memory, the lamination runs from one side of the radius arm around the diff casing to mid way between the diff and the radius arm on the other. It's also been tubed through the entire length.
