    Front Locker?

Theoritcal question rather than having any intention of implementing it.

I was talking to someone the other day and they reckoned you'd get a diff lock in the back first, and in the front only if playing very hard.

Thinking of the extra weight of a 4BD1 in the front would a front locker be of more use?

What about a locker to strengthen up the rover diff in the front so it doesn't break every 5 minutes.

Id say go the rear first as in most cases if traverling up hill most of the weight of the car is transfered to the rear and the rear with have more traction, This is only my opinion

Dobbo and rangieman both made valid points.

Another consideration is that engaging the front locker makes steering much more difficult, so it gets used less than the rear.

I'd go rear first IMO, in saying that though, we have done some little tests with lockers in our county, trying to get up a steep section with just the rear in was a struggle then flick the front in and it made a huge differance, allowing it to crawl over a steep tricky section of track which proved hard with just the rear in.
I beleive it does seem to make a bigger improvement with the isuzu's due to the extra weight

But then you can't use a front as often as the rear due to lack of steering (as mensioned) when they are engaged

We have both. Due to the difficulty of steering when the front is engaged it's only when things are dire that the front gets locked up :0

IMHO the rear is the way to go first, as some have said the weight transfer is the big thing and getting that drive to the ground is another and as the rear will flex better than the front you will have more traction. In many jap 4x4's alot of them go front first as they have a lsd rear, and the jap trucks only have lsd's to keep up with rovers.

there is a video about as scientific as you can get showing a patrol going up the same hill 3 times with all options and the font wins over the rear by a long shot. Saying that most people here including me go rear first becasue it feels more natural.

The rear LSD in patrols is about as good a LSD as you can get.

I'm not familiar with the video, but if the patrol had a rear LSD, adding a front locker would make a lot more difference, compared with a locker replacing the rear LSD and open front diff.

thats a really good point, the vid did say it was arb back and front, I assumed they LSD was taken out but perhaps it was a biased video because of that. Now I am back to square 1!!
