    This difference alone would mean a different part number, but I don't see it as a show-stopper.
    Mine is single belt.

    Apparently the alternaters on the old toyota 2H engines fit but I haven't tried one to confirm,will be looking into it.

    Well, started to look at the problem today. First looked at the wiring and almost immediately found a problem, but it is a symptom rather than a fault in itself.

    The earth wire for the regulator has fused between the plug two inches from it and the regulator. (The reason it has fused here is that it is a thinner wire than it is from the plug to the alternator.)

    Now it is unlikely this is the fault - the only function of this wire is to ensure that there is no voltage difference between the earths of the regulator and the alternator. In normal operation the current should be close to zero. It could fuse if it were the only link between the battery earth and the engine, but the battery is earthed to the gearbox, and there are two good engine/chassis straps and the measured resistance between the alternator body and the car body is almost zero.

    So as far as I can see, it has to be that the earth for the alternator output must be internally connected to this wire, and also earthed to the alternator body, and this last connection must have an intermittent fault that has resulted in the entire output of the alternator going through the wire.

    Any other ideas?

    I'll have to pullthe alternator off next.

    Pulled the alternator off, and took it into an auto electrician on Wednesday. As of last night he was still trying to get the pulley off so that he could get it apart.

    The burnt earth wire on the regulator was familiar to him - "faulty engine earth". This will date back to when I had a faulty engine earth about eight years ago.

    Just got a call from the auto electrician. He has the alternator fixed (got the pulley off eventually). Brushes worn out. My sister who lives next door four kilometres away is in town, and I'll get her to pick it up. Cost is $175, and he is prepared to send it back with an invoice - and I have never done business with him before. You can see why he was recommended to me!

    That is very reasonable! Most try to tell you its buggered and to buy new Would have costed me that much to do it my self here with time counted.

    For those who are more or less local, the auto electrician was Robbie Cook in Dubbo. Assuming it works OK, and I expect it will, he is to be recommended.

    Thanks for that as we don't even have an auto sparky any more over here I've been using Mudgee for the bits I cant do but freight is a nuisance. Dubbo would be much better in that part.
