    Looking after an R380

    Hi Guys,

The R380 conversion was finished today, and I gotta say it is sweet - smooth and tight. How do I keep it this way?

    So far, I figure;

Don't let the engine labour in low revs, change down.
Don't sit on 110 in 5th for hours at a time, change down to 4th every once in a while to keep things lubricated, cool and happy.
Up the Idle RPM to 800/900 rpm or so to stop any vibrations.
Don't let it idle for any length of time

    one other thing:

    - When I am stopping for the last little bit (say 2 meters) sometimes I can feel something catching in the drive train (I assume clutch?) its only a little grab but I don't like it. Is this just because the clutch is new and needs to be warn in?

I'll keep people posted as to how it goes, right now I'm a very happy man

Could be the handbrake shoes adjusted up a bit too tight. That will give the same grabbing indications.Good luck with the R380.........Brian

coast it to a halt in nuetral.

if it still catches its either the Tcase (but thats unlikely) or the handbrake shoes skimming.

to adjust release the handbrake completely then turn the adjuster counter clockwise. then with a rear wheel up and the CDL open spin the rear prop shaft and slowly tighten the nut till the shoes just scuff then back it off about 1/12th of a turn.

Yep, it happens in neutral as well. Pretty sure it will be hand brake, just had a new one put in.

If your R380 doesn't have an oil cooler, you probably want to think about hooking one up.

    R380

If your going to tow alot maybe fit an oil cooler as mentioned.
You have covered all the basics plus remember its not a race car so dont change gears like a race driver.

The syntrans - transaxle type oils have been good in ours with very regular oil changes.

    Best of all enjoy it.
Great g/box behind an Isuzu I must say.

I'm interested to know what peoples reasoning is for not driving in 5th for to long? The oil pump runs no matter what gear your in.

because its an overdrive the tooth pressure loading is a lot higher, the oil gets hotter and suffers from shear failure this wears the teeth, the metal coming off then winds up making friends with the filter and the magnetic plug, once the plug and filter have enough friends the guys who want to gate crash get turned away by the bouncers at the party down that side of the box so go and find new places to party and thats usually in places like bearings, tooth contact areas and syncros.

Fair enough if that is peoples reasoning. I have to say I have heard this reason before, I also dont buy into it sorry. There are alot or reasons 5th gear fails but i don't think lack of oil is one of them. I think it's a combination of engaging too early incorrect oil, an towing.
