    starter motor

My starter motor, 1982 4db1 seems to have given up the ghost, so we had to push start it this morning after failing to jump start from low spare battery. Son was 15 minutes late for work.

[will check the alternator/regulator to check it is not that sort of probem tonite]. Solinoid clicks in and headlights appear strong. A few weeks ago the starter motor kept running after motor started, a couple of times.

So think we may have a crook starter. How available are second hand starters to suit?

I don't think there'll be too many 2nd hand ones floating around,I'd try all the landy specific wreckers first and if nothing turns up there are new ones available.Mind you the AEA book says they suit the army engine(should be the same). They are supplied by Auto Electrics Australia and the part # is
    ASMI67000G (Genuine OE),which is a 3 bolt starter.

    Are you sitting down???

    12V starters are very $

A 24V starter is a few hundred new.

    Sure you are sitting down?

    Really sure?

A 12V starter is ~$600-$1000 I have been told by a few sources. Possibly cheaper via US ebay.

The starter should be able to be rebuilt, even if it is at fault. I got my starter rebuilt when I thought it had died. Turned out to be a bad earth on the battery terminal. The starter was like new inside and only needed a set of brushes.

Starter is certainly rebuildable. The problem is likely to be the solenoid, parts should cost no more than $20 to replace the contacts. Brushes not much more. Labour maybe as much as $100 at any good auto electrician. Mechanical parts get more expensive.

If it is the solenoid, suspect an earth problem as the root cause - in my case it was high resistance in the engine/chassis strap across the LH engine mount (and, in fact, this may be your only problem).

Sadly pulled the strater to peices on Sunday. Where the brushes run a section of metal was ripped out [the metal that the brushes run on, which is in sections around the comutator if that is the right term], so we think we are up for a complete new Starter.

Buying one from the US is probably your best bet. All their small trucks are 12V, so the starter is much more common there.

Check the cost of a new armature (the bit that turns) if available. This, with new bearings and brushes is likely to be cheaper than a new starter, particularly if you do the work yourself.

check that its actually throwing and the contactors in the main solenoid are making contact reliably.

its about a $15 dollar fix if its that.

the clue being that the startermotor was spinning on which is a dead giveaway for a sticking solenoid.

My son works for an engennerring firm at Tweed heads. My son's boss got us a new Armature, shaved a couple of thou off on his lathe. And so the starter is now running out of car, but solinoid is sticking so it keeps running and does not stop. They will try to fix the Solinoid today.

if the solenoid is worn badly an application of spray on teflon hardset lube will cure your ills.

suspend the solenoid from a very slow drill spindle (sub 100rpm) and give it a spray while its turning and leave it turning for at least an hour.

very very very lightly sand the leading edge in the morning with it turning in the drill again and you're good to go.
