4BD1 Hard starting

May i suggest that you get the starter reconditioned, or get it checked.
I got my done and it started ok before, but now it fires on the first or second compression hot or cold. They have a tendency to get slower and slower with age such that you don't notice the loss of turning speed and just attribute it to engine wear.

Thats my suggestion.

On the fuel screw idea, the 3.9L engine in nuffield tractors doesn't have any glow plugs at all, for cold starting there is an excess fuel button that you push in, which injects more on startup. So it will help but shouldn't really be neccesary.

brian when you left my house yesterday the cranking speed was very slow, you said you had replaced the batterys, so I believe the starter motor is your problem and as the post before me said get the starter looked at.

For sure, I only found my 120" started very easy, just out of ass, I was content with how it was, as like I mentioned it is just a hack at the moment, but wanted a little more go, so cranked the fuel up and the hard starting went away

I took it tonight, to pick up a new toy, 700 Grizzly, it does fair blow black soot under fuel load, but has a fair bit more poke, either way, to me, the motor is sacrificial, as I have 2 others, but I wouldn;t hesitate to crank the screw the same as I;ve done on one I cared for

You wont need glow plugs with direct injection unless well below zero:eek: Mine will jump straight to life at five below.

So it is very lazy wile cranking? Before you pluck the starter........Check the battery voltage and stater pole voltage wile cranking. Also check the earth from the battery to the engine or gearbox as huge losses can occur on cranking if a leakage is happening.

The latest news is,

Had the priming pump looked at by the bloke at dynamic diesels and he reckons that if it 'squeaks' or primes first thing in the morning than I have no problem with fuel being at the pump or air getting in from the primer. So.... He reckoned to try the injectors so I got them reconditioned. None of the injectors reached 100 psi and #4 diddn't even register on the guage! The nozzles were pretty shot and I couldn't believe the thing actually ran at all. I also changed all filters and cleaned everything first before re-fitting. Anyway.... its all back together and sounding promising so the next day I tried to start it. 16 turns later it fires.....:mad:.

So the starter is now in a million pieces and being 'looked at'. The vehicle has been fitted with a new battery a week ago and I hooked it up directly to the poles on the starter and it does the same thing (to eliminate poor wiring in the system). So we'll see if repairing the starter fixes it!

If not, you need to get the compression checked. Compression pressure given in my manual is 441 psi at 200 rpm.

BTW, injector pop pressure is given as 2630 psi - and should maintain 2346 psi without leaking.

Bearman here was telling me that his 700,oookay old 4BD1 had towards 200psi and still started and run well:cool:

I does wonder why someone doesn;t try the free alternative, that worked for myself by fluke before pouring money away:)

is your starter the original Mitsubishi type?. I'd be interested to hear what condition it was in after 20 yrs work. There might be a civilian 12v model that fits. If its really shot then consider giving Zenith Engineering a call in Milton Brisbane. They specialise in Isuzu motors and might have something in stock. I bought my Hitachi alternator there.

Not many would be 24 volt, the one's I work on are all 12 volt.

Its fixed!!

It was the starter. When i pulled the brushes out, only 2 out of 4 were touching the comm surface. So I got a couple of new bearings and put the centre on the lathe and cleaned it up a bit. Got some new brushes fitted to it by leslies auto electrics and presto, the thing starts first crack and the engine spins realy fast compared to before. I'm happy I got the injectors done because they realy needed it by the looks of them on the guage! The guy just showed me where they should be on the guage and they diddn't even get half way when tested! Anyway, good money spent, now I have a very clean fuel system and a good starter again.

Thank you everyone for the advice you've given. I test drove it from Townsville to Newcastle towing a trailer and it went well.
