    4BD1 Hard starting

    Hi all,

My 4BD1 perentie is having a few drama's starting but only the first time for the day. After it has been started once it seems to be alright for the remainder untill the next day when it does it again. I've just put a new battery in it to see if that would fix it but it diddn't change anything. I have also checked the lead on the left hand engine mount and it is in good condition. I also used jumper leads to connect the new battery directly to the starter motor to eliminate any of the wiring in the vehicle and this diddn't make any difference. I have checked the fuel lines to the fuel pump and the fittings on the fuel pump for leaks as well. Any furter advice would be appreciated.

Does it crank slowly, or need a lot of cranking to start???

If the latter, it may be a compression or injector/pump issue. How many km on the engine?

The engine has aprox 300,000 on it. It does crank a fair few times before it starts but on some mornings it is better than others. Oh and i mite add that it is in townsville so there isn't an issue with it being too cold.

The 4BD1 in my 120" needed to crank alot more then either the one in my rangie, or the rangie wreck out the back, fuel filters etc were fine, Although I never showed alot of concern as its usually just used as a hack around, work pig

So anyhow, one day I decided I'd crank the fuel screw up a bit, to give it a bit more poke, sometimes its HEAVILY loaded on the tray and trailer

Fuel screw out one turn............and now it starts a treat

    Does a bit better to

I am going to change/check the CAV filter and the little one on the banjo fitting on the bottom of the fuel pump and see if i just have some crap in the system. When it turns over it sounds spritely to begin with but as it gains compression the starter seems to slow a bit but keeps turning untill it eventually fires. There is a small amout of smoke that comes out the exhaust but not as much as i expected after turning so many times. I wonder if it has something to do with the engine not getting its fuel untill a few turns into starting??? I have also done some 'all day' trips and have run 2 tanks of fuel with 'diesel power' injector cleaner in and it hasn't changed anything.

Possibly injectors leaking and allowing air into them while standing for a long period.

If you look on the side of the fuel pump, you'll see a cam to the side with a lock wired all thread and nut, break the lock wire and turn the screw out, mine is half a turn out, but does blow alot of black smoke under heavy load Give it a try and report back, it may not be a good idea to go as far as I have permanently, but wouldn;t hurt to try it
