    4JH1

Just bumping this in case anyone has done any more detective work on the 4JH1 engine, as it looks like a really nice alternative.

The Trucks used the MYY-5T 'box behind it, I'm not sure what 'box the utes used ?

Either way I'm sure the 'box could be relatively easily adapted to the LT230, possibly moreso from one of the 4x4 utes and it wouldn't be hard to be a stronger 'box than the R380.

    Hmmmm....

they are heavier on fuel than a tdi, and not as powerful as they should be. they ran electronic injector pumps etc from about 2003 too. and are noisy as heck.

    not a good alternative IMO.

curious too, are they a gear driven timing set up? I'm 'planning' a conversion after the 200tdi has done it's fair share. The 4jb1t is getting pretty old now though. It looks like their lifespan is held back by the alloy heads like the tdi to around 350K (just a general impression and still trying to work out if it is an alloy head?)

    Spoke with the guy from this company;

    http://www.japparts.com.au/products/...ket-engine.htm

the chinese copies apparently are mainly set up as genset motors, the gudgeon pins are not up to spec for automotive turbo-ed applications. This long motor he sells is from northern china, and is the only one he has confidence in. Sound like he has been at it a long time.

All the local 4jb1t engines are completely flogged, I doubt I would find a straight head or bock in all of them. don't know anything about these 4jh1's yet.

The 4JB1T isn't known for head problems or alloy heads. Some of those have done the 1,000,000km.

Like a 4BD1T, the 4JB1t can be resleeved and kept on rolling. It's not a powerhouse, but it's not a disposable engine either.

It may be possible to swap all your ancillaries across (incl injection pump) from 4JB to 4JH. Gain a little more displacement and a better piston/liner fit.

    Damn.

I thought I'd found my near perfect Tdi replacement

ATM I just can't get my head around the extra 140kg and torque pulses of the 4BD1T.

As Steve/roverrescue keeps saying, I'll be running around in a Tdi powered Deefer for years to come....

Hey Rick, they aren't a BAD engine, but I wouldn't go out of my way to fit one to a defender. Prefer a 4bd1T with a heavier flywheel and some decent soundproofing. Also, if ever you get to drive a 110 etc with a turbo 4bd1, you WILL not settle for anything less.

Remember what it was like getting off a 250cc dirt bike and getting on a 600/ 650 for the first time? Would you go back to the 250????

    I think not

a nice upgrade route in future, and perhaps in reverse then too. If the 4JB1 ancillaries get scares the 4JH1's may well fit.

I sent off some info requests to the chinese manufacturers of the 4JB1T's advertised on the net, and got a reply back to remove the brand specific request; so much for being built under licence as some seem to imply/claim!

It's in the back of my head to piece together and recon a 4JB1t over the next few years, that way I'm not rushing a transplant when the time comes and I can go for the cheap stuff that comes up from time to time.
