also needs to know that the lt77 will last about 3 minutes behind a 308![]()
Actually theres only one 4l60E (VR VS VT and S2 VT with Gen3) commy onwards), the other one is a 4l60 (VN , VP) with no E or commonly Known as a T700 . The "E" just means electronically contolled ,As for strength , Ive seen them handle 1000HP easily albeit with the right modifications (And with a Transbrake !!) THe Early VN Box , is the one to go for as you dont need a BCM .
The LT 77 and the R380 are both 77 MM boxes , the 380 just has better selectors/synchros , 5th gear. (and reverse in the right place !!)Its not really any stronger .
Hi 400,
I agree with you about the 4l60e what car it suits but I am not sure if it could handle 1000hp. I haven't seen any information supporting that, only to 700hp but I could be wrong.
Stock 4l60's need to be beefed up a bit to handle the extra weight for the 4wd application. I had a 4l60 rebuilt, all new 5 plantery gears, kelvar bands, new sun shell, servo's etc etc to handle 650-700hp with new convertor for $2300, very happy with the box and the way it performs under load, it still has a very positive change between gears.
I also read in this thread someone is putting in a 308 TDI. I think he might be a little dissappointed with the power he might have to supercharge it.

Within the Australian market you also had the 4L65e which was used in the HSV's behind the early ls motors (Also behingd the AWD models too I think). It had a 5 gear planetary set standard (as opposed to 3 gears I think) and is a popular upgrade amongst SS owners starting to push out higher power levels.
Hi guys,
Been following this thread trying to figure out if this is possible.... I have a v8 range rover that has had the lt77 previously. I still have the lt77 bellhousing if i need to use it. I'm looking at buying a R380 from a Defender 110 that was behind a TD5 that comes with the bellhousing etc. Can I use my existing Lt77 bellhousing onto the gearbox or is there shaft length issues etc? Is this possible, what exactly will I need?
Thanks guys would really appreciate some advice!
Dan
