300M is a low alloy, vacuum melted, steel of very high strength. Essentially it is a modified AISI 4340 steel with silicon, vanadium and slightly greater carbon and molybdenum content than 4340. 300M has a very good combination of strength (280 to 305 ksi), toughness, fatigue strength and good ductility. It is a through hardening alloy.

Machining is best accomplished with the alloy in the normalized or normalized and tempered condition. Final machining to finish tolerances is done by grinding with care due the hardness of the heat treated alloy (Rockwell C 55). It is important to do a stress relief anneal at 550 F after finish grinding.

So just to mix this up a little bit, this rear conversion would obviously be best suited to also doing a 3rd member swap in the front... high pinion 80 series front 3rd member??

It depends on what you want to do with the vehicle?
I often wonder why people think that it is ok to put this in a landrover, when people that use their 80 series hard, tend to break them and replace themDo they think that Land Rovers won't be as hard on them?

Well, it is in a Disco, so I would like to think that I am at least a little bit lighter then a 80. the G series diff should be more then enough to handle the massive output of the 300Tdi

did you know that the material that was used by Maxidrive and is still used by Hi Tough Eng. Is equal to 4340 300m and some feel it has some slightly better charcateristics than 4340 300m for alxe shafts....

in this case size does matter..... going to 35 spline will definitly help. What material are the new stub shafts/spindles made from?
