Ls1 is the way forward.. but what gearbox?

    Mornin all,

Ok we have decided to go the Ls1 conversion for my range rover classic AND my brothers,
The question is do we go straight to a patrol box? OR is it possible to use a T56 gearbox (standard Ls1 box and adapt this to rangie transfer box or should I find a patrol transfer box and change everything!

    OR

Sell my range rover and buy a patrol!

    Cheers NAT

Rakeway Engineering can supply a kit to fit a Tremec tk0600 between an ls* and an lt230.

it is a seriously nice bit of kit, but seriously expensive.

Go with the 4L60e out of a late commodore, adapt to lt 230 transfer.
Hyline 4wd in Vic have done a few of these conversions.
Look up youtube " Hyline 4wd"

When i was looking everything i read on the 4L60e to LT230 was all bad, go with the 4l80e, If i ever get a chance and come across a very cheap t56 i will look at doing a custom adapter, i actually spoke to Mal Woods who does alot of work on t56 boxes about making an adapter, he quoted me some pretty big dollars to do it but said its definetly possible and the t56 should hold up it it just fine.

I don't agree with you regarding the 4l60e being all bad. I currently have an 4l60 behind a supercharged 383 chev adapted to lt230. Auto has all new insides 650-700hp ( cost 2k) and has never given me trouble. It has a great low first and good overdrive. Keep the tranny cool and you won't have any troubles.

It wasnt the box that was the bad points i heard, it was the adapters kits leaking etc, when i looked around i couldnt even get a straight answer from anyone on if they would do a adapter for me even though they had done others. Who did the one you have?

I made my own for the 4l60, but hyline 4wd has made a few for the 4l60e. I believe he has had no issue with oil leaks. The tailshaft of mine is very close to trans pan flange which i ground back so the uni joint didn't hit it which it doesn't have any oil leaks.
