    Series Landrover engines.

    Hi, I'm considering getting a series style land rover for my first 4WD, weather that is Series 1, Series II, Series IIA or Series 3, or even a county/defender, I'm not too sure. But what I am wondering, is most of the ones I have been in have been fairly gutless, and not even capable of doing 100km/h on the open road. Which leads me to the question of what can be done about this? Which engines are best? and is it worth trying to use something like a V8 from a later model Rover, or just doing some sort of Ford/Holden engine swap?

    they'll do the dollar on the open road....

    even the old clapped out "god knows what I was using for fuel" at the time series 2.25D could push fozzy along at upto 105kph if I was game enough to hold it pinned.

    if you want to comfortably do the dollar youd be better of starting out with a county or tdi defender

    the early cars are capable of a slow hundred but my lord they are thirsty ... a tail wind helps the cause a bit though

    If you specifically want the 'Classic Series' look, then find the one you like, and budget to fit a Tdi diesel. There are many Rover V8 conversions running around and with a bit of work the old bent 8 fits quite well too. The 200 Tdi though will fit straight to the existing gearbox, and with Range Rover diff Centers will sit on 100kph happily. The only weak links then are the gearbox and half shafts... This is fixable by fitting the 5 speed with full time four wheel drive BUT... It's a lot more work! Depends how far you want to go, with what budget, time and skills...
