Hi guys, I have got a question regarding engine conversion. My step mothers aunty has a 2002 Land Rover Discovery 2 with a 4.0 Auto, the engine is on the way out. what sort of engine conversions are there that would not cost a bomb, i.e Toyota/Lexus 2 or 3 UZ or Holden Ecotec supercharged. Or rebuild and modify the current engine. also what is the diff able to handle. my father is thinking of getting the transmission with the engine as it would probably be cheaper and save hassles but making 2wd to save fuel (preferably). He wants to make a reasonable amount of power aswell. also would the Toyota/Lexus v8 fit.
Also what would need to be done to complete the conversion such as; wiring etc.
is there anything else I should know about or have I pretty much covered it?

Disco2 engine conversions arent all that common at all. They're difficult due to the integration of the electronics. Most common for the V8 is transplanting or rebuilding to a 4.6 litre spec V8. One of the locals here has just picked up his which was transplanted with a 5 litre Rover V8, but typically thats about it.
Thats not to say it cant be done.

Gday nonricer, anyone with good engineering skills can mechanically fit another engine to a D2 but getting the electronics to play ball is what costs heaps. The easiest way to get a bit more poke is to get a 4.6 rover short motor that has been rebuilt with new cylinder liners, commonly known as "top hat" liners. A D2 doesn't have any massively over specced driveline components so going wild with big engines WILL break things down the line unless you replace just about everything with uprated bits.
Oh and putting D2 into 2wd isn't possible unless you can find free wheeling front hubs to fit. It's quite pointless trying to do that for a tiny gain. The only way you'll get reasonable economy out of a D2 it to buy the turbo diesel version, the TD5.

SubscriberNo engine conversion to another brand will be cheap. When you take into account the new engine and box, engineering, electronics integration and fabrication, I doubt you'd get any change from $20K which would make it a very expensive D2...
Not impossible with time and money though.
