Just a couple.
4 Knots is much quicker than 2.5Kmh.
The sub that left the heads is the one divers found at Newport last year I think.

My dad sent me this link to an animation of the Japanese mini-sub attacks on Sydney Harbour.
They must have had nerves of steel to attempt this, and I can't imagine how nerve wracking it would have been for the blokes on the Australian/US ships inside the harbour.
BTW -if the animation seems to stop, you just need to click the "Continue" button here and there.....

Very well done animation.
Yes 4 knots is 7.4 km/h, and the sub that escaped headed north and was the one found off the Northern Beaches.
The two destroyed subs were recovered and their remnants were amalgamanted into one sub for display. I think it is still at the war memorial in Canberra.
I am surprised the subs tried the eastern channel - that is a tough bit of navigation if you were not familiar with the harbour - particularly at night, without radar etc. Also I do not understand why they fired in front of the Chicago as it was at anchor.
I also find the effort of the aircraft particularly heroic - if the defences had been on the ball that aircraft would not have lasted long.
Overall I think the Japanese were plain unlucky - rather than our defences being top notch.
