Got another old W123 Merc today - this time a 300D.

Bought my daughter her first real "own" car today. Went 50:50 on the cost. Of all the cars we looked at she likes W123 Mercs the best (strangely).

Found this 84 diesel with 300,000Kms on it in pretty good nick. Engine is good. Bodywork OK for a car nearly 30 years old. Owned by an "elderly gentleman". Cost us $3,500.

2 new tyres and an aircon re-gass and we should be in business.

They are a bit like Defender 300TDi's with the engineering simplicity. Build quality is about 10 times better though. No ABS or airbags, but lots of nice solid Mercedes protection if she has a prang.

Thought it was funny she liked these better than a nippy little run around!

Ha - that is funny. Glad I did not pinch "your" car.

Am intersted to hear what makes a young person such as yourself (I gather you are 20-something) partial to an old bus like that.....

Bee Utey - you are a mind reader. I have just been trolling the US sites about the possibility of doing just that.

Apparently it is not a good idea as the std engine gets too hot. There are a lot of differences between the non-turbo and the turbo engines.

    What about diesel gas.....

Yup, I have done a few NA diesels, Nissan & Toyota 6's, Isuzus in Deefers, the principal should be the same. Anyway, if you put a turbo on I would use very low boost, just enough to clean up the combustion, no major increase in fuel. I don't remember them as particularly economical, 25MPG springs to mind.
