Time to get back on topis methinks !!
Anyone else have any dream 'attainable' cars. Or perhaps you already own your dream car (non LR type we are talking here) ?
Well, I suppose I'll throw mine in - I have a Citroen DSpecial, currently stored because I can't afford to have three cars on the road, and I'm frightened of of something going wrong - they are getting hard to find parts for.
For a car designed in the mid fifties they have a lot of attractions - very roomy five seater with a top speed over 160kph on just over 100hp, unequalled ride even on very rough roads, excellent handling, ground clearance adjustable up to about 30cm, hence remarkably good offroad for a 2wd, helped by the large weight bias on the driving wheels. Good fuel economy - most economical speed is 120kph, generally durable and reliable. Exceptional brakes - capable of an emergency stop in a straight line with one front tyre flat and hands off the steering wheel (1970s French TV ad) thanks to the steering and suspension geometry. Very accurate suspension alignment (uses NO rubber) with wishbones and trailing arms on taper roller bearings gives exceptionally good tyre wear. Engine very durable after the 1967 redesign. Headlights very good, self levelling and look into corners.
On the negative;- hard to find parts, and most mechanics take fright even looking at them. Noisy by modern standards - wind noise and mechanical/road noise. Backing is an art - the sides are not parallel!

JDNSW, next time you come through Penrith, go down Batt St and look in the yard of European AutoCare - they are a Peugeot/Citroen specialist. The yard is filled with old DS vehicles.

A teacher at school had a DS - used to cop a hiding from the other kids about it too. I liked it, but never said so. Would like to drive one, but then I'm afraid I;d want to buy one !
If you like the GTI would you be tempted by the R32......an awsome piece of machinery. I actually had money down on the first style R32 but it didn't make it to Australia that year so went for the Nissan 350z instead. Now the 350z is a whole lot of car but as you have pointed out Captain, carrying the family around has to take priority sometime, so sadly the z is no more.Quote:
