Have been fly fishing for years and even tie my own flies.
It is not as dark and mysterious as some would have you believe.
There are a number of DVDs and videos on the subject as well as books and magazines. Just do a Google seach on Fly Fishing Australia and there are numerous sites to get lots of info.
For the beginner in a new region, you can't go past using a guide to give you the local tips or even cheaper, most pubs and clubs have fishing clubs that will show you the ropes.
Last time I was in the Khancoban pub I just asked a few locals who gave me some excellent info on where to go and what flies to use.
In short when fish are rising to eat insects on the surface you use a floating line and a dry fly which matches the type of bugs they are eating.
If they are not eating on the surface you can try a nymph which imitates the larval stage of the insect down near the bottom. In fast flowing water you can use a wet fly on a sinking line to get down to where the fish are hanging, usually behind a rock or log just out of the current where they can ambush prey.
It does not cost a lot to get into it. Just go on e-bay and have a look. Like anything, you can buy a Sage or Loomis rod for lots of $$$$$$$ or just start off with a Diawa or similar make for a lot lot less.
