Question Fly Fishing, move = new hobby.

Is there any fly fishers here!!
Taking the plunge and moveing to NE Vic, might have some more time on my hands as not working 11 day standby anymore.
The gear is pricy, but with all that water running out of the hills, there must be some good fishing ????.

Theres a big dif to casting on the back lawn ( me at the moment) to catching fish.
just thought Ide have a go ,seen fellers fly for barra on El Questro when I worked there. Now were moving to Vic and its rivers, so nothing to lose but cold feet.

Have been fly fishing for years and even tie my own flies.

It is not as dark and mysterious as some would have you believe.

There are a number of DVDs and videos on the subject as well as books and magazines. Just do a Google seach on Fly Fishing Australia and there are numerous sites to get lots of info.

For the beginner in a new region, you can't go past using a guide to give you the local tips or even cheaper, most pubs and clubs have fishing clubs that will show you the ropes.

Last time I was in the Khancoban pub I just asked a few locals who gave me some excellent info on where to go and what flies to use.

In short when fish are rising to eat insects on the surface you use a floating line and a dry fly which matches the type of bugs they are eating.

If they are not eating on the surface you can try a nymph which imitates the larval stage of the insect down near the bottom. In fast flowing water you can use a wet fly on a sinking line to get down to where the fish are hanging, usually behind a rock or log just out of the current where they can ambush prey.

It does not cost a lot to get into it. Just go on e-bay and have a look. Like anything, you can buy a Sage or Loomis rod for lots of $$$$$$$ or just start off with a Diawa or similar make for a lot lot less.

Fly fishing is a more expensive, more difficult way to catch less fish

I used to fly fish for trout many years ago, and it was the reason why I got into 4wd's. I was starting to get interested in saltwater fly, but I hurt my back and had to give it away.

In recent times my back has improved and I have made a start with the saltwater aspect.

I would like a Sage, but have settled on Redington (owned by Sage) 8 weight.

Oh the money I've spent on fly fishing gear.

And how long has it been since my fishing mate moved to Hobart. About as long as it's been since I've been fishing.

As said above, very expensive way to enjoy not catching fish.

    Cheers
