All of a sudden it wont idle,, no coughs or splutters straight to zero,, have adjusted the idle screw to where it should be but no difference?
    Runs fine, starts first compression,

    any ideas?

Is the fuel pump still ticking? Give it a whack.

Sounds like the idle jet is blocked. Might be worth getting a kit for the carby and giving it a clean inside. Vacuum leak might do it but usually they make it run funny.

    feels fuelish to me,,

my first thought Simon,, but car runs fine,,
could still be the pump at low revs though,,

No! a blocked jet? in a carby that was last touched by a [suby] mechanic in '88???

    who'd a thunk it??

nice idea WR,, another firm possibility.

If it's a blocked jet, try crossfiring 2 pots to induce a breif backfire, it'll only be temporary as whatever crud's in there will find the jet again, but it will tell you whether you have to get the spanners out.. .

I don't have to say, always be ready for a fire, just in case..
