I think the current winner is a guy called Monster Tjima (or something like that). He drives a v6 twin turbo vitara that apparently pumps out over 1000kw of power. They say the hardert part of the drive is getting the tyres to last!!

Actually, Ari Vatenen broke Walter's record in 1988, setting a time of 10:47.22, that is the record that stood for ages. And here is the video.

sorry Craig , i was just going with the Commentary on the video that says Quote " Walter smashed the outright record of 11:00 minutes and this record was to stand for 10 years" ?

    Talking Ari, a true legend...

Yep, just beautiful. There is also another film of Ari's records breaking run, with the entire 10mins shot from a camera down low at the front. It is poetry to watch the perfect lines and car attitude around the corners.

Got to love the way the Yanks tried for years to get up that hill faster, in all sorts of wierd specials, then the Europeans turned up and blew them into the weeds!!!

No worries, just to clear things up a bit, Walter actually set a time of 10:47.85, not bad for his first attempt! But apparently Walter later admitted to making several mistakes, and probably could have shaved 25 seconds off if he ever tried it again, unfortunately he never did though.

This is the quote I like the best
Audi's first attempt was also in 1985 when Michele Mouton blasted a Sport quattro to the top in a winning 11 minutes 25.39 seconds, a record then. How humiliating for the good old boys in their big super stock Chevys and Dodges, beaten by a woman!
