The road markings look as though they could be 1 metre apart, so must be there to be able to show in court the distance travelled between 2 pictures that are time-stamped thus proving the speed. Nice trick!

Yep, that's how they do it... a real life saver that one.

The cameras will be heading the way of the system in the UK, that is, digital with a line down the phones to a com-poo-tah so the photo/infringement gets sent out that day. The cameras will be all 'infra red' so no flash - and yeah despite the signs, amongst all the other crap on the side of the road distracting you, you won't know you've done anything wrong until postman pat lobs at your place. Not much of learning experince really...

Last year coming back from Dubbo, I went through Tenterfield, to show the kids the saddlery.

Got a photographic post card from the NSW RTA of my drive down the main street, alledged to have been snapped by "inroad speed detection device" My great offence was "64 in 60 zone". My mate the local Qld Police Sergeant rolled around his living room floor when I showed him, thought it was a huge joke.

It's all about increasing "yield". The less human work involved the higher the profit.

There was until recently a speed camera on a strip of open road, but there were numerous very large signs on the approach from each direction warning of the camera and the camera itself was in full view high on a pedestal. I've always wondered if the local council disagreed with the camera's existance but couldn't rationalize why the RTA allowed the warning signs. But maybe, just maybe, the RTA was actually trying to prevent accidents on that section of road, being a short down-hill overtaking stretch leading into a left bend where oncoming traffic could be travelling quickly but their speed might be hard to gauge.

The road is now dual carriageway with the camera bypassed, so presumeably is no longer an accident-prone site.

The later pic says 'delay 391ms', which calculates to enough speed to get the pictures taken.

At the moment the RTA must provide a warning of cameras in use but this will change - covert camera units will be here. Police must display a 'camera in use' sign within 50m of the camera car but the regs don't specify where which is why they're usually placed after the camera (only 18 or 19 camera cars left and they're being phased out). I agree that there are places that cameras are warranted and a good thing - places where tradtional enforcement isn't safe/practical/possible, but they're over represented in metro areas. NSW treasury is dependant on the damn things so they're here to stay...and multiply.
