    Avgas in Brisbane

After several years of being out of motorsport, I've decided to dust the cobwebs of my Datto take it out for a bit of fun this weekend. When I built the engine for the car, I built it to run on Optimax. I ran it 2 years ago and found that Optimax isn't what it used to be so started running it on Avgas.
Seems things have changed in the last couple of years and Avgas is very hard to get in anything less than a 200L drum (available from Archerfeild airport). If I could use 200L before it goes off, I'd buy it but I can't use it that fast.

So my question: Is there anyone on the forum who is involved in aircraft in Brisbane that might be able to assist me in purchasing smaller quantities of Avgas?

    Thanks in advance.

I believe the rules pertaining to the sale of Avgas were changed a couple of years ago. I have been told that the retail outlets at airports are now only allowed to pump into an aeroplane. As to sale of bulk Avgas in drums, I have no current knowledge, but can say that in the past I could buy it in four gallon drums from the BP & Shell racing fuel outlets.

BP and shell still sell their 100 octane racing fuel. Also Shell now has a 100 octane fuel for sale at some of it servo's. BP has something similar i believe.

    Thanks for all the replies.

I probably should have added that I have contacted BP and Shell. Both put me onto airports whose reply was that they can only pump into aircraft (hence my request) or provide 200L drums.
The call to Shell was quite funny. I think they are using an international call centre. The person I was speaking to went through a list of service stations that were listed as distributors of Shell 100. The closest one that the could find to me was a local BP service station! I queried the suggestion that a BP service station would sell a Shell product and the polite lady on the other end of the phone insisted that they sell it. Of course when I rang the BP and explained that I was going to ask them a stupid question, they agreed that the question was stupid and that they don't sell Shell 100!!! What a surprise!

I have also tried many of the speed shops. They can supply lots of exotic fuels at very exotic prices but none have firmly said that they can get me 20L of Avgas (or equivalent).

Finally, today I have a supplier who is able to decant 20L for me from his own 200L supply. Unfortunately, he is in Sandgate which is a big drive from Jimboomba.

So for this weekend ... I'll give BP 98RON another go and knock back the ignition timing. See how it goes when I fire it up tomorrow.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

I reckon I could find more than enough events to use up 200L of Avgas very quickly but all this fun isn't cheap. The event I'm doing this weekend is the final round of the Qld Motorkhana championships. It's been years since I've done a motorkhana and for pure fun, I reckon they are the best value for money event you can compete in. They are also fantastic for developing/practicing car control.
I wouldn't mind having a crack a some bitumen rallies too. I've done a couple and really enjoyed them. My little beast would be perfect for them. Just have to put a proper seat in for a navigator rather than the paper mache one that's in it at the moment to keep CAMs happy.

I'm sure a project will be found. If not, I'm sure I'd have no trouble finding a project for it!

If you buy BP Ultimate (98octane) and put the 8 octane boost in it, it works on most older racing engines just fine. Wynns have a product that is sold at Super Cheap.

I also had a letter from a fuel mob selling performance fuels:
    Cheetah Series Racing Fuel
Head Office Victoria. But I am sure they said they had a Brisbane distributor

    p.s. Have fun racing!!

    Cheers,
