    If you like rallying, .......

.....you'll love this! What rallying's all about, a far cry from the modern WRC races.

The Classic East African Safari Rally:
4500km over the toughest roads of East Africa, in pre '74 rally cars. It's highly competative and draws a large entry of 911s, Escorts, Datsuns, Mustangs etc.

    That is a fantastic event.

I worked as suport crew for a Subaru team out there (driving a Troopy with all the spare parts and fuel).

4 days of huge KMs and very little sleep. It was a blast!!

High speed suspension changes on the side of a dirt road. Dust. Flat tyres. Mud. Driving through the night. One of the cars hit a giraffe up in northern Kenya & was totalled. What a way to spend a long weekend

The Subie came 9th overall, which was pretty good for a privateer with limited funding.

Must have been a laugh! Have you lived in Kenya?

Just for info - Ian Duncan won this years event in a Mustang - don't know how much is standard since it has wheels from a Landcruiser VX!

Since this is AULRO, here's a pic of a Disco support car or route opener:

Yeah - I lived in Nairobi for 3 years.

I'll see if I can dig up some pictures of the rally. The bloke I was helping was a Kenyan WRC driver called Patrick Njiru. Not sure what happened to him, but he was very well known in East Africa.
