I pressure blasted the driveway last weekend and did it again during the week plus trimming the grass right away from the edges. I bought two 20litre drums of sealer and a bag of ground glass (spread over the sealer to prevent slipping when you walk on it), plus a couple of cheap nylon brooms to brush the sealer on.

Weather has been great all week, and I wake up early this morning all primed for action, looks out the window.................Bloody Rain!!

My FL1 will have clocked up 120,000k's in a few months so I contacted ALLFourx4 to ask them to check their records as I believe the previous owner had the engine rebuilt sometime before he sold it. I wanted to check if the T-Belts had been replaced so I would'nt have to go to the expense of replacing them. The answer I got back was that they have no record of the car prior to me bringing it to them for service. This seems strange as when I first went there the receptionist looked up the computer and mentioned the first owners name. Also when I was having the Auto Tranny problems a few years back the mechanic working on my car had to order parts through them and mentioned that the vehicle has a track record there.
Anyrate, Banj, I asked AllFourx4 for a rough estimation for a 120,000k service and to replace the T-Belts and the estimate came in at just under $2,000.

We have about four months to go before the vehicle reaches 120,000ks and we are starting to think about getting rid of it and buying a Jeep Cherokee!!!!!!

    NOT HAPPY JAN!!!!
Hey Jim yeah Karen did see you & waved but thought you missed her as she was past you.Was on her way to get the pink slip for the camper but left her fone at home so turned around to come get it..We where running around like chooks with heads off yesdy as they have now changed the rules & it had to be paid that day ,We left it to the last possable moment so thet it was'nt due on Xmas time again. But with the rules being changed & it being the last day before the 3 months where up it had to be paid or they told us we would need a blue slip which ok but it would of been more expencive as we would of had to get new plates aswell..
We had to get a stat dek & get it signed by a JP so we could put it in Karens name as where not married . could'nt get that done so i SOLD it to Karen for $50 as it is regod as a box trailer on the rego papers..Only cost $32 all up as its on pension rego & only paid transfer & stamp duty..

Karen is going to see Peter on monday for you as she does his house on mondays about your car as that is way to much & she will see about the history of it & see if she can get a print out for you..Peter is the owner of all 4X4 kotara..Also you could go see or ring Dave at TRG on Pendelberry RD just round from us he is good & not to dear..Tell him we said to see him the ones with the green LWB landrover he'll remember us then..
Another day of rain it looks but i going to get some paint stripper so i dont have to sand much..Realy had enough of sanding..

You could look at the GREAT WALLS they same price as the Jeep but not very good in my opion as a friend has one & just had trouble with it , it Kept going into 4WD on its own & all the sensers & reversing camer went on it as well turns out a plug deep under the dash comes apart easy so they hope its fixed..

Jeeps have a reputation of being pretty expensive in the service department to apparently..Bloke up the road has one a new 4 door not the cheroky the other one. He was saying it expensice to have the service done & parts are dear aswell..

Hey i'll sell ya a green series 3 LWB ..

We are seriously thinking of selling it & moving onto a disco , something a little bit more modern ..A diesel D1 4 door be nice ..

The 120,000klm service and T-Belt change on a FL1 with a KV6 motor is a major service and I expected BIG dollars, in the order of $1,000 to maybe $1300 tops. The estimate they gave me was a worse case scenario. When you consider the vehicle is probably worth about $5k to $6k that is a fair percentage of its value. If Karen could talk to Peter and get him to sharpen the pencil a bit, it would be a great help, and would be much appreciated.
No way would I look at a Great Wall four wheel drive, they are crap. A bloke at work bought one brand new and he is very unhappy with it.

I might contact Modern Motors at Dungog, they are LandRover specialists. I believe the bloke who used to be the work shop manager at AllFourx4 now works there. At least I can see if the AllFourx4 quote is fair dinkum or not.(I keep calling it a quote, it is not a quote but only an estimation).
Anyrate Banj, I have a few months to think about it and boy have I already sunk some dollars into this car. It's going great at the moment, can't complain, but they say if you own a LandRover your hand is always in your wallet...........How true!!!!

Actually, now that I have calmed down a bit, I wouldn't mind trading the FL1 in on a late series D2 or D2a with the TD5 diesel motor. NO WAY would I consider the petrol guzzling V8, which do sell cheaper than the diesel!!

Almost forgot, you mentioned seeing another mechanic at Cardiff. My experience with independant mechanics is that they are not keen on working on LandRovers, particularly Freelanders. They don't have the electronic gear to read the onboard computers. The computer gear cost a fortune and to invest that much into electronic gear for the occasional LandRover repair is not worth while for them. They would rather deal in JapCrap as there is more of it out there.

Hi all - long time between drinks...

Jim - I have a 2002 D2 TD5 - it has around 210,000 on the clock now. I really have to admit it has been a pretty good ride for me. Having said that it'll probably crap itself next time I take it out...

They're not fast and their turning circle is atrocious. They are comfortable.

Expensive to run (it costs me around $60 a week in diesel just going to work and back).

My biggest fear is failure in a major component. You'll get little, if no, change out of 7,000 on an engine rebuild and it'll cost around 6,500 to have the gearbox redone.

Of course, there will be people who will say "do it yourself" and "those prices are excessive" - "that's wrong"

Well, I helped a mate drop the gearbox and transfercase out of his D2 a couple of weeks ago - it took the two of us 2 nights on a hoist to get that bugger out. The garage we were going to use quoted $4200 to do the re-furb - and that doesn't cover the cost of pulling it out or putting it back in.

We have found a place where we can get a refurb kit for just over 400...

But the point is, not all people can do it that way. Sometimes we just have to send it to a garage and hope there is enough in the bank to cover it...

I know you went through hell with the Freelander.

If you are going to go look at D1 or D2 diesels - look for a low mileage one and be prepared to pay a little extra.

Banjo - I am following the Harry thread. You are getting way more done on it than I am down here. It seems that every weekend is a magnet for rain these days

Thanks for the eyeopener Drifter, my KV6 Freelander is also costing about $60 a week to run. I use the recommend Premium Grade and the petrol consumption works out at about 14litres per 100 ks!!! I don't use it to go to work as the Bus Depot is only a ten minute walk away. That's just my wife using it for things that women do!!!

I have all the stuff to do the driveway with ( it's bloody expensive) but because of the rain and the fact we have had the Grandkids here this weekend, I haven't been able to do it.
The concretor bloke that I know said you should give the driveway two full days to dry out, this time of the year and brush the sealer on in the morning, which gives it the day to dry out!!!

Still unhappy with the quotes for the Freelander and am seriously thinking of getting rid of it!!!!

Karen said she is going to see Peter this week about your car . She gave him all the details last week & told him that you are a close friend & on a budget & could he possably do a good deal for you.Karen streesed that you where a very close friend ..What did Dave say ??

You could allways just get the Tbelts changed & do the service yourself theres not much in it..
Change the oils.Check the fluids flush & refill radiator check battery. Check & adjust the brakes as needed.Give the throtle body a good cleaning through.Maybe even change the plugs & leads..& i can give you my card to use at AUTOPRO for a 20 or 30 % discount on the parts..

Trade it for a freelander 2..Or a series or a disco or a 90 or defender. Na go all out & get a top of the range Brandnew disco or Range rover.

Yeah, I have thought about that also. I am between a rock and a hard place as I have spent a lot of money on this car and I must admit it is going well at the moment!!! The petrol consumption does not impress me!!
