Mate, I can't help you there as I am not a mechanic however if you PM Woko at Singleton he may be able to advise you as he is a Landrover mechanic!!!! I will hunt up that FL1 on Fleabay and give you a link if I can find it again!!!!!![]()
Hey Aus do you know of anyone who has made nonslip liners for them by machining new liners with a lip at the top & them machining the block to take the lip ??
It mit be worth me looking into it as a project plus it would give Karen a car to run around in....Do you remember where the FL was , was it local . . .

From what I can understand, the 1.8L is basically a bad design, the cooling system really doesn't hold enough coolant and the thermostat is badly positioned so that when it opens it causes Thermal Shock to the motor which over time causes the liners to slip and the sympton of that is Head Gasket Failure. I believe you can reinstall modified liners and also a special laminated head gasket as well as a redesigned thermostat, but it is all quite expensive and people don't bother, particularly as most FL1's are at least 10 years old it is not economical to repair them so most people just sell them as scrap.
The V6 (which I own) can also have the same problem but because it is a different engine it is much less likely to happen. The diesel is the only way to go and if I had my time over I would have bought the TD4 diesel motor. The big downside of the V6 is they are thirsty, as I have found out and like all European cars they use PULP which is of cause more expensive than ULP. Hope that helps.![]()
Just a thought, I wonder how you would go scrapping that motor and putting a TD1 or TD4 diesel motor in!!!!!Probably a major job as the engine mounts would be all different, but a bloke with your many talents could easily overcome that!!!!

Yeah, I wonder what a 2nd hand diesel motor would be worth????Phone All4X4, I'm sure they can give you a ballpark figure and then you can do your sums and see if the project is worthwhile!!!
You have more chance of getting your money back if you sell it as a diesel!!!!!![]()
