Righteo but if you do not have enough that is ok.No rush.
I do a lot of hitchiking -- sometimes I have gotten lifts with ladies, young mothers, etc. who say something like, "I never pick up hitchikers, I do not know why I stopped and picked you up."
One young single mum lady of 18 with a baby, who gave me a lift, told how when she was 16 with her baby she was hitchhiking at Tabulum when the driver of the ute who had picked her uppulled a gun on her. She jumped out of the moving car with her baby and ran. He chased her with the gun, shooting at her. A passing motorist saw this jumped out of his vechile with his rifle and threatened to shoot the guy chasing her who ran back to his car and sped of with the young girl's pram nappies, etc.
Once had a lift with a guy who left me terrified for my life. He dropped me near the turn off to Bengalo State forest where the back packer murders happened. This guy was not Ivan Milat, the convicted man who always has claimed that he is innocent. And this guy had a chainsaw in the back of his truck so he may have been familiar with the forrest where these murders happened. No other lift has ever scared me like that one, and I believed back then that I had just escaped with my life.
So I researched Ivan Milat & those backpacker Murders, and found a ex-girlfriend, who I once wanted to marry, had been raped by Ivan Milat at Easter 1971 [she has since changed her name]. I have told Banjo a few things about her in the past. So I know that Milat is bad, but I think he may not be the backpacker killer.
I have read in a book discussing Ivan Milat [I have read a number of books on that subject, because of what happened to me near that forrest, and because of what happened to my Ex-girlfriend] that 400 backpackers have disapeared in Australia over a number of years. So hitchhiking is dangerious--and I still do it. Did it from Tweed Heads to a Bush Fire Brigade bimonthly meeting at Casino on Wednesday this week [Northern Rivers Operational Support Brigade-- does Communications, Airbase, catering. logistics/transport, and RAFT--Remote Area Firefighting Team]. I do Communications and have done Airbase twice. I do want to do Airbase.]
I also plan on hitchhiking to Darwin this winter, in order to collect some Fossils.
I do think it is less dangerious to pick up a hitchiker than to hitchhike yourself. A great many hitchikers are grateful for a lift.
As a driver if someone threatens you you could put the vechile into a tree or telegraph pole on their side, so I do think hitchikers who are dangerious area are a very small percentage of them, because the driver as some controlof what happens.
Hitchikers who are drug addicts after money for a fix are the exeption--these are very dangerious, and I have heard some real horror stories from people who had previously picked up Drug Addicts.
However if you do pick up a backpacker DO BE CAREFUL.
One man who gave me a lift told me when he was a 16 year old apprentice Motor Mechanic he hitched ome from work on Saturdays when there were no busses. One guy who had homosexual magazines on the passanger floor of his car tried to abduct him. This 16 year old grabed they guys gear leaver and slammed it into reverse while they were travelling forward up the road--big cruches and the car came to a stop with the guy yelling at him. He jumped out and walked back home, leaving the guy there.
So if you are going to pick up hitchikers do think before hand what you may do if in a bad situation.
Some people do advertise wanting lifts.
