Yeah Ian, I heard that many horror stories that I was hesitating to do it just yet. In this area we have until July next year before they turn the old system off so I was going to wait a while. Got talking to a Telstra rep and he talked me into changing over now and I was quite surprised how easy it was.

So how's (semi?)retirement suiting you Jim? We don't seem to see you as often these days, you have been missed.

Still around, thanks Ian and working harder than ever, the project at Fort Scratchley is taking up some of my time. The project you might remember is the refurbishing of an old Bofor and modifying it to fire by a mixture of propane and oxygen. We are making progress and when the conversion is made we will strip it back and paint it's original colour scheme.

After we finish that there is and old Mk 1 Bofor to be done up, but it won't be converted to gas firing. It will only be a static display.

Also involved now with the RSL, but it doesn't take up as much time and of cause Mrs Aus has the whip out for me to catch up on work around the home PLUS I am working two or sometimes three days a week.........whew!!!

Anyrate, it's good to be doing different things rather than just driving, driving, driving all the time.

ps. Forgot to mention, had a reunion at Fort Scratchley last
Saturday night with the old unit (113 Battery) some of the blokes I haven't seen in almost 50 years, was a good time.

Me again Ian, this clip gives an idea of what we are doing. Our conversion on the Bofor will be programmed to fire at 120 rounds per minute which is what the old Bofor achieved. The circuit board was ordered from this mob and we are building the rest ourselves. We have some talented people who volunteer at the Fort.

I think we might have to scratch around and dig up some live ammo for Jim's pop gun. Wouldn't hat be fun?
    Cheers, Billy.
    Keeping it simple is complicated.

Yeah, I wouldn't like 40mm rounds coming at me at the rate of 120 rounds per minute, would soon make things very hot for you.

While we are talking Bofors here is the latest use for the gun by the Yanks on their AC 130 Hercules gunships called Spooky 2. The gunship is armed with a 25mm mini gun, a 40mm Bofor and a 105mm cannon as well as various missiles.

    AC-130 Gunship

I reckon that's not bad for a weapon that was first developed in the 1930's and the version on the gunship is almost identical to the original version.

ps. The Yanks started using the Bofors in Vietnam and had them mounted in the old Dakota's which were called "Puff the Magic Dragon" before they moved them onto the Hercules.
