Ean - the bugs are FANTASTIC!!! Several people over Xmas commented that they can't understand why the bugs are by-catch - they taste better than the prawns!

Over xmas/ny we got through about: 8kg of prawns, 5kg of bugs, 8kg of abalone (both wild caught (us) and farmed) and 4kg of fish!!! (EDIT: forgot to add - 2 southern rock lobster!)

The bugs are definitely worth doing again.

    Gday Ben,

Its not so much they are a by-catch, its just the small quantity of them we catch...To my knowledge the NPF ( Northern Prawn Fishery ) which I operate in , is the only prawn fishery that has both a size limit and a no take of females, so the comercial quantity is maybe 1000kg per year, where as our prawn catch is anywhere from 80,000kgs per year upwards.

The size limit was dropped to 60mm across the head last year down from 75mm, and the reason they are whole is so when we get boarded by fisheries they check for bugs with eggs (females )..

This is the main reason behind them being classed as by-catch, a bad choice of words me thinks but easier to understand maybe.

    Cheers Ean
