    Defender Dual Wheel Carrier

I'll be at the Land Rover Clubs Expo in Sydney this weekend. I'll have my County there with a prototype dual rear bar on it with wheel carrier and jerry can carrier.
I'll also have the first completely finished production model, fresh from the powder coaters. I've made a couple of minor improvements from the prototype.
I've made four of these so far. Three are spoken for and one to be confirmed, but I intend to make more of them soon.

    Some details.......

The right hand carrier takes the spare wheel and opens automatically with the door, the left hand carrier takes either two jerry cans or a second spare wheel and is secured with a latch. This means if you want to remove the L/H carrier between trips, there are no latches to undo in day to day use.
With two wheels fitted, the tyres are wider than the body by approximately 50mm each side (255/85/16 - 33"), but not as wide as the flares. The wheel mounts are offset to one side, so when only the one spare is fitted the mount can be flipped over to bring the wheel in from the side of the body.

The main bar is laser cut 4mm steel and bolts to the chassis using all original holes, no drilling to do. The inner backing plates are made in a way that they use the vertical and horizontal parts of the chassis to ensure a solid mounting.

The standard lights from a Defender transfer straight from the car into the bar. The bar will be supplied with aluminium blanking plates to go where the lights were on the body. The blanking plates are 3mm thick and could be drilled and used for mounting things such as a power outlet or an air hose outlet. (blanking plates not yet fitted to my County in the pics below)

Current price (as at 24/07/15) $2600 + freight for either combination of 2 wheel carriers or one wheel and 2 jerrys.

The photos below are the prototype on my County.
I'm hoping to fit the first one very soon to a cool looking 90 belonging to a member on here. I intend to take a lot of pictures of the fitting process etc so I'll post them when it happens.

    Cheers, Murray

Looks awesome - can't wait to see the dual wheel version of this. Just curious - what's the gap between both spares like? I'm wondering how accommodating the carrier will be for slightly bigger tyres...

As a dual wheel carrier with 255/85/16's (33"s) there's about 2cm gap in the middle. This is the standard way I would supply the carriers. By the way, the tyre on my County in the picture above is a 255/85/16.
For bigger tyres I would just need to make the wheel mounts with a bit more offset. I did design it with bigger tyres in mind. It wouldn't be any extra charge as long as I have plenty of notice, for example, if I just got two wheel mounts powder coated by themselves it would cost $85, but if I get them done with a batch of stuff it would only cost $20-$30.
I don't mind modifying things to someone's needs, but you might have to be prepared to wait for it.

I would love to make a 130 version Juddy, but being a one man operation I've only got so much time and one pair of hands, so unfortunately it's not at the top of the list right now.

    Hi Murray,

You have put a lot of work into developing this dual wheel carrier.
I will look forward to seeing the pictures of the 90.

Do you know if the carrier will fit around the Hayman Reece tow bar on my 1999 TD5 110?

    Cheers
    James

    G'day James,
The extra bar doesn't sit below the chassis at all, and with the cut-out area in the middle of the bar I'm confident it wont be a problem with any type of tow bar.

    G'day Brad,
It will be several weeks before I have more ready, but I am already ordering components and materials etc to make them as soon as I can.
I'll put you on the list and let you know when things progress.

    Cheers, Murray
