1942, the Japanese were victorious throughout Asia. A small band of Australian Independent Company soldiers kept 20,000 Japanese at bay, stopping them reinforcing the Japanese in New Guinea, and elsewhere. They could not have done it without the Timorese natives, whom the Australians owed a debt of honour.
