Berlin's first curfew in 70 years kicks in. Some Berliners still have a sense of humour.
It's just before midnight in Berlin's bustling Friedrichshain district and the curfew is about to begin.
Leaving a Späti — the Berlin colloquialism for a kiosk — a group of friends is struggling to haul a crate of beer outside into the heavy drizzle, joking that they need to stockpile supplies — or, as Germans would say "hamster" — before the new curfew kicks in.
The German capital has implemented a nighttime curfew in response to a dramatic increase in COVID-19 cases. On the first night of the new regulations the mood was somber in the Friedrichshain district, a virus hot spot.

3 COVID trials have been closed for safety, and that's a good thing.
Experts were comforted that companies are following safety precautions. They pointed out that pauses in vaccine trials are common, but pauses in treatment trials like Eli Lilly’s are rare.
pausing treatment trials — like that of Eli Lilly’s antibody drug — is rarer, and perhaps more worrisome.
That trial was testing the treatment on hospitalized patients — a group that was already sick, and in which declines in health would not be surprising. So for a trial like that one to be paused, the safety concerns must have been significant, they said.
“I’ve done 50-plus monitoring committees, and it’s quite a rare thing to do,” said Tim Friede, a biostatistician at University Medical Center Göttingen in Germany, referring to his role as a safety monitor for drug trials.
For now, the companies behind the trials aren’t saying much. In a statement in September, AstraZeneca said it paused its trial to investigate “a single event of an unexplained illness.” But two vaccinated volunteers reportedly developed the same condition, an inflammation of the spinal cord called transverse myelitis.
Johnson & Johnson said that it was pausing its vaccine trial because of an “unexplained illness.” Eli Lilly’s trial of the antibody treatment was paused because of a — so far undisclosed — health difference between the group that received the drug and the group that received a placebo.

In France, police raid the homes of French government officials as part of an investigation into the French governments response to the pandemic.
"Police have raided the homes and offices of France’s health minister, public health director and former prime minister as part of an investigation into the country’s response to the pandemic.
The country is in the grip of a worsening second wave, with new daily coronavirus infections hitting a record – jumping above 30,000 for the first time.
The judicial probe was launched in July following dozens of complaints by doctors, local authorities and nursing homes.
It aims to establish whether those in charge at the start of the outbreak showed a “lack of will to fight a disaster”."

A previous unknown strain of the virus in Australia & NZ, has been discovered on a ship, off the QLD coast.
A cargo ship has been forced to anchor off the Sunshine Coast amid concerns a previously undetected strain of COVID-19 is on board.
The ship, Sofrana Surville, sailed into Australian waters from New Zealand via Noumea on Monday.
An engineer who worked on the Liberian-registered Sofrana as well as another ship tested positive to coronavirus in New Zealand at the weekend.
The engineer has a strain of the virus not previously detected in New Zealand or Australia, officials say.
