I ended up getting the tool from Trade Tools. Definetely not cheap but hopefully it lasts forever.
It is Japanese made apparently, brand is Lobster and comes in a metal case with four different size dies etc.
You can get the complete range of Rivnut's / Nut inserts and tools from Rivnut Fastening Systems Fastening Systems | Rivnut based in Capalaba but deliver Australia wide. 1300 887 341.
I've used this method a number of times now:
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/projects-t...tool-pics.html
No special tool needed.
The rivnut tools seem to vary depending on what size rivnuts are needed.
For example you can get
M3 - M8
M6 - M12
What would be the most useful for us ?

By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.
