Greasing my nipples!
Hi, Can anyone give advice on how often and even how to grease the nipples on my D1. It seems like it must easy but I am not sure where to apply the grease.

Grease nipples should be on the driveshaft UJs and on the sliding splines. The front one may have a blanking plug if it is like a D2.
On my D2 there are no nipples on the tie rod ends , but a good idea to get greasable ones if you replace.
IMHO you should grease all after going through any water, and at about 5KK intervals.
The way to do it is lie on your back under the car , get lots of dirt in your eyes ( after you either chock the wheels or make sure the handbrake is on and the transmission in "P"). In the absence of using a jack etc, I have a 1 handed gun with a flexible hose. I try to stop with the grease nipples facing either horizontal or downwards and push grease in until a bit of old grease comes out of the seals on the UJs, and you will hear a crackling noise. Before you put the grease gun on the nipple clean the nipple with a clean rag. BTW the top of the socket on the grease gun turns and tightens up if you turn it clockwise.
Take the plug out of the front shaft slider and fit the correct nipple by trial and error.
If you find that the nipples are in the wrong place roll the car forward or back about 300CM and they will be in the correct place. Make sure to reapply the handbrake and "p" for auto before getting back under.

There is a large range of threads and sizes used with grease nipples, make sure your using the correct pitch thread and size before you start.
