The deed is done.
I attempted the glue trick, but to no avail. Be warned, to some degree it glued the bit into the drill... so use with caution.

I ended up drilling it out. My first attempt burnt out a standard drill bit.
Second attempt was a carbide tipped 'glass and tile' bit which worked well, until the carbide snapped. That was a $20 bit stuffed... whoops.

3rd attempt involved a trip to bunnings where I got a Sutton Cobalt drill bit- much tougher material, and was able to drill the hardened steel of the impact bit. I used a 3.5mm bit.
Backed it up gingerly with a 4mm fine thread tap - M4x0.7 IIRC. Threaded in a bolt, and pinched in the vise and a few love taps with the soft face hammer and it was out.

I went down into the work shop yesterday and one the boys gave me an impact driver that a 1/4 drive that had snapped off inside it.
He tried gluing the flat end of a drill bit, and it didnt work, so i tried drilling it, but as they are hardened, snapped a number of small size drill bits.
...also drilled with a 3.5mm carbide drill bit....still drilling to get a few turns of a tap in....

When I drilled mine I started with a 1.5 or 2mm bit, nothing flash just a fresh gold 'titanium' one.

Used my pov pack cutting paste.... homebrand sorbelene cream from Woolies $2 and went easy with pressure. Got about 7-8mm in then reamed the hole out with a 3.5mm bit.

Used an M4 tap to get a grip and it came out as easy as.

Most recent 'incident' was snapping the chuck retaining screw (L/H thread) in an AEG 18V drill whilst unscrewing some rather large coach bolts. (Drill with handle has more grunt than the impact driver)

Was covered by warranty, but didn't have time for the run around over Xmas.

Used the same process and it came out surprisingly easily even though it was obviously HT and loctited into the shaft.

Used a replacement from an plder German made one in pieces. Was identical.

It really is amazing how much grunt these things have, and that's what causes these problems.
