Thread: Can I borrow a torque wrench capable of 460nm?

Often there’s an alternative equivalent like 200nm +90 degrees which can be done with regular tools and a paint marker. And not to be too worried if you don’t get there exactly on these things with some loctite on the thread.

The BMW E30 crank front bolt has a similar torque value and no one is doing it up that tight.

And use a new bolt each time on these big torque bolts

I haven’t had to do out Td5 one yet, but I’d be pretty confident that most who have done the job haven’t used a torque wrench.

A quick calc - 460Nm comes out around 31kg at 1.5m
Grab a bit of medium wall pipe 1.5 m long, slide it over your breaker bar and apply 31kg to the end of it (I normally use a spring balance or “fish scale” for this sort of thing).

You may be able to make an extension to use you existing wrench.
I did this with a pipe over a breaker bar on the bolt and shifter in the other for the torque wrench, just did the maths and a few texta marks for maintaining distances.

I was in the motor trade for the first 6 years of my working life. The only time a torque wrench was used was for cylinder head bolts, main bearing caps and big ends. And not even every one of those.

I remember helping dad when i was a teenager and i think it was about 75lbs for everything, back then most old cars used cast iron so not much risk of stripping threads.

I have a 3/4 Warren and Brown deflecting beam torque wrench that covers the range and would be happy to loan ... I'm about 2 hours drive from you though.

Breaker bar + 1m square steel tube + pry bar + luggage scale got the job done
