    Towing Electrics Query

Hi all, I have a general question about towing electrics - hope it doesn't seem too dumb.

I've ordered a D4 which should arrive in June. In the accessories brochure it says that the vehicle comes standard with "Tow Pack - Tow Hitch Receiver with 12N/12S electrics". From what I've read this is now an outdated UK standard and that most UK caravan manufacturers now use a 13-pin ISO EURO configuration.

The build information I've received from the dealer indicates that my vehicle includes the following:
    (028BU) 12N 7 PIN Elec Socket & Harness
    (028BX) Tow Hitch Receiver NAS
    (028ED) Towing Pack Australia

Given the above what, if anything, will I need to do when I'm ready to hitch up either my caravan or my boat trailer to the D4? Both of these have Narva flat 7 pin plugs that are common in OZ. Do I need to do any rewiring or are there adapters available?

PS This is my first LandRover so I'm totally unfamiliar with wiring in these vehicles.

    Ta, Ron

The d3 came with the "Large Round 7 Pin" socket, I asume D4 will too. If it does I would be changing the plugs on your trailers, The large round plugs have huge pins, and I'm not a fan of adapters - for towing a borrowed trailer yeh but not for a permanent solution.

Ron you can easily get adaptors. To go from 7pin round to 7pin flat.

I have found the only issue with running the adaptor is if you have electric brakes.

The wire in the adaptor is too small to take the full brake current, I keep getting an error, no brakes.

One thing that you may have issues with is LED lights on the trailer. The D3 (and I assume the D4 as well as lots of other European vehicles) sends a low voltage pulse through the indicator circuits every couple of seconds to verify that the trailer is still connected and that the bulbs are working. This works well for normal bulbs as the pulse is too short and too low voltage to actually create light but with LEDs it flashes the indicators faintly every couple of seconds. Also the LEDs don't provide enough resistance for the electronics to even realise that there is a trailer attached and this causes problems since the vehicle changes some of it's programming to allow for a trailer.

Search on here for "Pulse Shunt" devices and you should find details of a couple of suppliers of devices to fix this issue.

    Hope that helps some .
