    lighting/power?

in my Castle Camper i have only been using 240v for when we use it and i was thinking of eventually getting a Honda generator when we can afford it.
but at the Brisbane truck show i met an old workmate and he was telling me that the experience he has had he would recommend that i put a 12v battery on the camper being charged by the car via an Anderson plug and just plug my accessories into it. we don't use it enough to go to twin batteries in the disco
i am only going to run a couple of lights of it (led's), we only use the camper occasionally and not in remote locations, we just want to be able to access camp sites that don't offer power.
    what are your thoughts

Hi bigcarle, being as you don’t sound like you will be doing too much free camping, another option would be to fit a dual battery system to your tow and have a 12v extension cord to connect to camper.

    OR

Same set up but you could run an inverter connected to the tow vehicle’s batteries and just run a standard 240vac extension cord over to your camper.

In either case, this would not only save having to mount a battery in the camper, it would also remove the need to maintain a battery in your camper while it’s not in use.

Having the second battery in the tow vehicle means you will always have a fully charged auxiliary battery when you need it.

youd be able to make up a small portable power pack using a couple of gell cells or a small motorbike battery that will do just what you need.

if its only for lighting and you dont need masses of brightness I'd suggest a solar powered lantern. The one I have does the job for basic food prep getting dressed or for seeing where you're packing things but is a bit dim for reading or detail work. goes for a good 6 hours on about 8 hours sunlight and can be charged or run from external 12v or 240v adaptors.

the spare battery doesn't worry me too much as i already have a spare battery swapping it between 2 classic cars.
i have done the bit with the 2 cars with their own battery and of course it dies early because they dont get used often enough hence the reason i am swapping the batteries around to give the battery more work to do

Get a good 60 to 75AH battery and run the lights of it, 2 leds will last 2 weeks off them, get yourself a small 10 to 20watt solar panel to trickle charge the battery during the day, this is all we use for our camping needs and we do a lot of free camping.
