I need new tyres for my caravan. The existing ones are old cross ply tyres with the size being 6.95 14. Does anyone here know the equivalent size in a radial tyre? The rims are Holden HK/T/G.
Dave.
Wow! you got a great run out of them. Or have they been lying around a while.
This van is an 88/89 model. For the past 10 years this van has lived at my caravan park, owned by a bloke who lived in Melb. He would ring me when coming up for a holiday and I would put it on site for him. He would come up about three times a year. About 300 metres return from storage to site and back x three = 900 metres a year for 10 years. I purchased it in January and have done about 160 km
What it did in its first 10 years is unknown to me but obviously very little as the tread on the tyres is almost new. It is the side walls that are cracking.
Strange too that the inner side of the tyre seems to be worse than the out side which gets all the suns UV's.
I decided while the wheels are off to check and repack the wheel bearings. I did this today and after washing and drying the bearings they looked that new I reckon if mixed with new ones I could not tell the difference.
The brakes, shoes, drums and magnets were also as new.
Dave.
I may be showing my age here, but I was given to believe that trailers and c'vans were better off with cross-ply tyres due to less wall movement (as alluded to by Graeme).
Best Wishes,
Peter
Tyres have a use by date (usually a code on the sidewall), they breakdown after a certain age and are dangerous to use, my army trailer (1964) still had it's original bar tread tyres on it when I took it for rego and was knocked back because of their age, Regards Frank.
Cross-ply tyres are stronger and less likely to suffer punctures, less sway is always a bonus on older vans, having said that, I don't think the newer vans are any better than the older vans in the handling stakes, in reality the only advantage the newer vans have, is they are lighter..
Baz.
Cheers Baz.

I had to get a tape measure to confirm the rim size when I was looking to borrow a rim for my trailer from my slasher because no part of the size could be read due to the tyre being so deteriated. Whilst it was indeed a 14" rim, the valve stem hole was subsequently found to be rusted away when the old tube was removed. I'll have to put the tube back in - can't waste a rim and tyre! A new rim has been ordered for the trailer.
