So now I'm trying to get my Army trailer below 250kg, it weighs now , just chassis bare 290kgs and I have to fit guards and mud flaps to comply, gunna be a tough ask, Regards Frank.
    Frank,

the original axle/hub/wheel setup on a No.5/workshop trailer is dam heavy. You could slide a normal (39mm ?) axle on ford/holden hubs with alloys for the weighbridge trip

    just a thought

Actually - on a related note, the spring pack is ridiculously thick and heavy. If you temporarily convert to 2-leaf spring packs, by pulling all but the main and one other leaf out, then you will have a much lighter trailer!

I'm going to drop half the spring leaves out and I have a caravan axle, tyres and wheels to temporarily replace the Army stuff as well as the shocks and a few unecessary braces and I'll see if I can find some plastic mudguards, will see if it will pass as a boat trailer, Regards Frank.

    Fill the tyres with Helium.
Seriously, forget trying to get under 250Kgs if it is 290Kg without guards and mudflaps.
Although I did save 54KG on mine by machining off the brake drums , and changing the Toyota split rims and 750.16s for 205.16s and RRC alloy rims.

Brake Drums are HEAVY, and if you don't have brakes can save a lot.

No brake drums, the axle I am going to temporarily fit only has 14 inch holden rims and tyres, I reckon the spring leaves and shock removal will shave about 15kgs. and I'm hoping the puny caravan axle and wheels will give me the rest, Regards Frank.

Hi. On Monday I got a blue slip done on the camper trailer then went into the RTA to get it registered with NSW plates and disposed of the QLD one's.

Whilst there I asked the RTA why my bog standard no brakes 7x5 box trailer needs an inspection every year.
They looked at the rego papers and told me that it weighs more than 250 and therefore slips into the next registration bracket. $187 a year to register instead of just under $50.

They asked me if it had a spare wheel? t does. Well take it off get the trailer weighed again and if it weighs less than 250 get another blueslip and then come back to us to get the registration adjusted.

I'm now weighing up doing this against selling it and buying a smaller trailer as I don't really need a 7x5m anymore.

If you have 7x5m trailer - I think your rego costs are reasonable. I guess you need an escort vehicle when you tow the trailer on the road.
