You might want to renew the cables and possibly the rollers if they haven't already been replaced as they don't last forever. My son had to do some emergency repairs on the 1st trip with his when the roof fell down at 1 corner due to a broken cable.
Hi all,
check out our latest project.
It's a 1985 Jayco Swan. We bought it from the Sunshine Coast just a few weeks ago. We've been searching the web for a long time and found that most wind-up campers were located in Victoria, so it was great to find one closer to home (Gold Coast).
The previous owner and his brother (a carpenter by trade) have replaced the pop-top roof, fitted new wall-linings, new floor etc.
However, it has no canvas. The Jayco Swan was fitted with the 'pull-out ends' when new, however, we have decided that we will just have the two ends and the sides enclosed. (ie ditch the pull-out ends idea).
It's an empty shell inside, which means Dad and I can do a refit to our own design and liking.
So, time to get busy over the next few months with this re-build. We'll keep you posted on progress.
P.s. If you know of any good canvas makers, please let us know. Also if you've done a similar project/fit-out get in touch with us![]()

Harryj,
How's the progress on the popup caravan coming along?
Cheers
David
My sister and crew took a jayco pop top like yours around Australia for a little over 6 months with mum, dad and four kids. The miles it has done and the great state it is in suggest your rebuild should be well worth the effort. Hope it goes well.
Hi Dave,
thanks for your interest, yes we're still waiting for your canvas lady to return from her sojourn overseas.
Also, waiting to hear back about the gas lift struts.
In the meantime, we pulled out the annexe canvas to check its' condition. How surprised we were to find the canvas sections to be in excellent condition, hardly used at all. So, to keep costs down and within budget, we intend to use this annexe canvas to make up the sides/walls of the camper body itself.
Cheers, Harry & Son
looking forward to the updates
Harryj,
I have spoken to the canvas lady & it looks like she will not be coming home any time soon. May have to ask the question on the forum, someone here would know a canvas person.
Sorry Harry.
If i can help any further just let me know.
Cheers
David
I have good contacts @ the local Jayco dealer who have their own repair workshop. Would you like me to see if I can find out where they get / have got canvas repairs done?
G'day Graeme, all the cables and pulleys have been replaced with marine grade stainless steel. But a lot of effort is still required.
These cables in most campers are bow-string tight when under load (raising roof).
I've noticed on several campers that owners have replaced the front wind-up point, with a boat trailer, winch mounted on the drawbar/A-frame.
