    Melbourne Trailers

    Just visited Melbourne Trailers to get a quote for an axle with LR hubs. Nice bunch of blokes. They were quite chuffed when I told them that I had read in this forum about them being able to make up the hubs with 16mm studs for LR alloys. I am looking at starting the trailer in Sep. I will post pics as I go. Making a 7' x 4'6" box trailer with electric brakes. Any tips greatly appreciated

    Do they use OEM studs or an aftermarket stud, after alternative studs for my hubs.

    Honestly - well this is my thoughts on this matter!

    If you have the ability to competently and safely build an off road box trailer
    Dont buy a poxy trailer parts axle on hacked out electric drums with imperial studs that almost fit

    Just find one of the 653 million being wrecked disco 1s
    Pilfer the rear axle for a carton then take the
    stub axles - hubs discs & flanges - calipers - rear hardline and brake flex line

    Build an axle from solid 45 or heavy wall SHS or tube with flanges that the stubs bolt to and then you get to run proper bearings with proper studs on proper hubs with hydraulic brakes

    Youll save a packet (as long as you can cope with override hydraulic) and have a better end product

    "their" products I assume will be ALKO or such like still stuck in the seventies with HJ holdens

    The trailer "parts" industry is simply cheap and nasty - I guess that is what the market wants

    It can be done better and more easily using components properly designed for the task - ie pilfer parts from fourbies

    By the time you buy an ALKO 45mm axle a pair of 10" braked hubs then drill the hubs for the correct studs - buy studs and nuts you could have bought 4 rear axles and ended up with components that will outlast the trailer

    Dont even get me started on what the trailer industry consider appropriate with regards to leaf spring packs

    When i built my first trailer i started the same as you have described, keep it simple and light and it will serve you well, hope you enjoy your build, i know we will, heaps of photos please
