    Traction Control & Trailer Brakes

Here's an interesting question for those with technical knowledge of the D2 TC system.

If you are towing a braked trailer up a steep hill and the traction control is activated (which nips up the brake on the spinning wheel), does this also activate the trailer brakes?

Not sure how to wire a brake controller but it would appear that they can be wired to the brake switch or the brake lights. If to the latter, would the activation of the brake lights by the TC system then also activate the trailer brakes?

    Cheers,

    Franz

It does not activate tc on the trailer, only brakes them as normal.

Gee, I thought all trailers had traction control!

So, you reckon the trailer brakes are activated when traction control is activated on the vehicle then?

If so, that would not be very helpful, would it!

Does Traction Control activate the brake lights - I would not have thought so.

Are you thinking of Hill Decent Control - now I do not know for sure but I would think that the brake lights would trigger. If power trigger for the trailer brakes was being taken from the brake lights then the trailer brakes would activate.

    Hi Gary,

I think you are right, I was thinking of HDC. I don't recall having seen the brake lights illuminate during an ascent.

That sorts that out then - thanks.

    Cheers,

Just as a side note, I've always gone from the brake switch rather than the brake lights. The brake switch is right there in the area you are mounting the controller anyway.

no need to get smart the wording of your post was not fully clear.
iirc the brake lights on the car do not activate with tc, so the brake controller connected to the switch or lights does not make a difference. i could not find the right wire on the brake switch so ran a wire back to the brake lights, worked fine.
the trailer brakes will only work when you apply the brakes with your foot.

    Liam,

I confused TC with HDC which does illuminate the rear brake lights. Seeing that HDC only works when going downhill (when you would want the trailer to brake as well) that's OK then. As you correctly say, TC does not illuminate the brake lights and a brake controller wired to the brake lights should therefor not engage the trailer brakes when TC is activated by wheel spin.

    Cheers,

    Franz

Can anyone confirm that the tail lights come on with HDC?? I checked my car manual and there is no mention either way. Logic would say yes but Landrovers are not logical.

i do not think they come on either, i have never had a following vehicle mention anything about disco lights going off so would be surprised (i do use hdc sometime).
brake lights only come on when you press the brake peddle.
