    Well the best laid plans......

    In 2007 I got a basic off-road trailer built to go camping with. As part of the spec I had Land Rover hubs fitted to match the soft dash Range Rover I then owned and also sourced a set of second hand white spoke rims. All worked nicely.

    Come mid 2012 I transited to a D2a and about 6 months ago decided I should get the hubs and wheels on the trailer matched. Hubs were surprisingly easy to find as the D2 has a late Commodore stud pattern/size. On the advice of trailerparts though I did get a heavier duty hub. I also was lucky and found on Gumtree a set of 4 D2 steel rims with wheel nuts, centre covers and legal cooper AT tyres at a very good price.

    So come the Christmas break I finally had spare time to fit them. All went well until bolting up the wheel, when my son commented he couldn't get the wheel to sit flat on the hub. A quick look revealed that the wheel was hard against the side of the trailer and in my planning I hadn't realised that that D2 rims have a greater offset to that of the range rover classic..

    So I now need a new axle. Not a major drama, but it will have to wait as being Christmas/new year trailer parts is closed. Thankfully not a major expense and at the end of the day one more thing to gumtree

    At least special order axles including 45mm square ones machined to take standard hubs don't cost a lot compared with a special order HD hubs. I got quite a shock when I decided to replace the recently-fitted 45mm axle on my van with one to take 1.6T hubs - around 3 times the price!

    Yes I found that with the hubs as well, the price doubled going to a heavy duty hub. Still I have my fingers crossed that subject to the spacing of the spring plates I'll be able to get a stock axle length off the shelf

    Martins trailer parts are realy good.When I ordered my axle for my trailer I took a spare wheel in,they made up the axle to match the D2.
    At the time they could not supply the metric wheel studs so I could match wheel nuts.Landcruiser 100 series are a match,if you go to Don Kyatt spares in Welshpool they will sell them to you at a squillionth the price of a toyota stud.

    Many thanks and BTW it was our chat about 12mths ago which got me slowly moving on this

    I did use Martins trailerparts and they were very helpful (they seem to emphasise the "trailerparts" part of the name more these days). Roll on next week when they wake up from holiday slumbers.

    The D2 has exactly the same stud pcd (5x120), size and thread (14X1.5 mm) as a VE Commodore so these days it is a simple order, unlike when you were setting up your trailer a while ago.

    The only slight issue I had was the supplied wheel nuts were a smaller diameter than the Land Rover ones so they sat within the wheel bevel. If you don't have Land Rover nuts you'd need to get larger diameter ones that properly fill the bevel face on the wheel.

    I guess that you'll be on the road south to Albany now for a well earned break so enjoy the fishing!
