Yep, can't have anything hanging out the back. Here's a chart from Vicroads showing what is allowed and what isn't.

    Vicroads - overhang limits

You can have an overhang of 1.2 metres over the front of your car though, so you could stick it on our rook rack legally.

    not happy

    Not happy
Every one I know with 12 foot duck punts use them as trailers toppers.
I see camper trailers all the time with there punt or v bottom on top.
A lot of camper trailers even have boat racks so I cant under stand it.
Not liking the idea of putting the boat on top of the defender, 1 paying big money for roof rack , 2 trying to get it on and off the roof by myself.
Are there any good set ups for this ? See trade trailers with racks and over hang all the time.

I'd probably just let something like a duck punt overhang and ignore the laws (yes I know, I a really bad person ). You see the rulings will exist to stop the morons that insist on carrying dangerous thing like timber and metal outside the trailer. I imagine something "soft" that's big and not a danger to road users like a duck punt would be ignored by police You see if someone runs into the back of you it'll just fold up, so be quite safe. It weighs nothing so will not upset the balance of the trailer and make it pitch end to end either.

No idea, it is dumb, but as DC suggested, it was probably done to stop people bringing home 5 metre lengths of timber from Bunnings in their 6x4 trailers.
